PlaySight on the back fence
A PlaySight SmartCourt films every point from fixed cameras and turns it into video you can search. The ITF-approved 2014 setup used four cameras, one in each corner of the court, plus one replay camera at one end, all wired to a kiosk courtside. The kiosk reconstructs ball and player paths, calls lines and speeds, and cuts the match into tagged clips.
Tag, clip, report
I was a manager in Bruin Tennis Consulting, the 80-person student group behind UCLA tennis analytics. I tagged every point and built the match reports. We moved the team's tagging, video hosting and analysis onto software we owned, so coaches could open any point from any match.
Rudy Quan, Billy Martin and I are likenesses generated with Meshy AI from photos (Quan and Martin from UCLA Athletics and BNP Paribas Open photos, me from my own). The opponent, the practice coach and the crowd are generic Meshy figures.
What is real here
- Rankings: ITA final national team rankings, 2018-2025 (2020 season cancelled); the 2022 NCAA miss and the 2025 quarterfinal are from UCLA Athletics and the Daily Bruin. Rally-length and scouting numbers are from the two tracked Hawk-Eye matches.
- Ball flights and both players' movement: Hawk-Eye L3 tracking via TDI of Rudy Quan, UCLA's No. 1 singles player and the 2025 Big Ten Freshman of the Year (uclabruins.com), at 2025 Indian Wells qualifying. Shown with permission and replayed at home. The stroke animations are optical motion capture (Visual Analysis Lab, Toyohashi University of Technology; noncommercial use), timed to each measured hit.
- Straus Stadium stands: "Straus Stadium (UCLA)" by Victor Inc. on SketchUp 3D Warehouse (2012). The venue facts come from uclabruins.com: dedicated in 1984, 5,800 permanent seats, and the Katz Family scoreboard (5.49 x 9.51 m) at the east end. The current layout of 6 courts and their colours come from map data and 2026 UCLA match photos.
- Campus: OpenStreetMap buildings and paths (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) on USGS 3DEP terrain (AWS Terrain Tiles), with the USDA NAIP aerial photo (2025, public domain) for the ground, roof colours and tree positions.
- PlaySight setup: ITF approval report PAT-13-003 (2014). The camera mount heights are not published, so the positions here are an estimate.
